After graduation there are several options available for international students; you can either decide to stay in Australia or head home. You can choose to continue your studies in Australia by pursuing a higher-level qualification or another field of study. You are also eligible to undertake post-study work to put your newly gained knowledge to use and gain work experience in Australia. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection of Australia provides Temporary Graduate Visa or subclass 485 for international students to remain in the country after graduation for up to 18 months to travel, gain work experience, or improve their English language skills.

Complete further studies

Many international students choose to stay in Australia after graduation for further studies or to gain a higher qualification.   • Travel: After course completion, many students plan for a break before they return home or start looking for a full-time job. A tourist visa would be a good option if you want to spend some time exploring the country. This will let you stay in the country for a period of up to 3, 6, or 12 months. If you are planning to work in order to fund your travel, then you will need to apply for a Working Holiday visa.
  • Attend graduation ceremony: Those wishing to stay in Australia to attend their Australian graduation ceremony can apply for a tourist visa to extend their stay.

If you have a bachelor’s degree, you are eligible to stay in Australia for two years; if you have a master’s degree, you are eligible to stay for two or three years and if you hold a doctorate degree, you are eligible to stay for four years.

There are many ways to improve the chances of obtaining PR. PYP is a structured professional development program offered to applicants that combine formal learning with workplace experience. It is available in the fields of accounting, computer science, and engineering.

Requirements for Obtaining PR in Australia

  • You should meet the Australian study requirement which means you must obtain a qualification in Australia (excluding online or distance study) as a result of at least two years of study (it can be obtained by studying multiple courses)
  • Age requirement – age should be between 18 and 49
  • The minimum IELTS score should be 6 (or equivalent in another specified English language proficiency test)
  • You need to be nominated and should hold a skilled assessment for an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List. Hence the field that you want to apply to should be in high demand in the jobs listed on the DIBP’s Skilled Occupation List (SOL) — such as health, education, trades or built environment. Applicants who have been nominated by a state or territory government must select an occupation from the Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List (CSOL). The applicants should review the list to see if their area of study appears and to check the details of approved skill assessors.
