How are GMAT Scores Allotted?

The level of difficulty in questions asked during GMAT increases or decreases, that is, adapts, with respect to the answers of a candidate. It is, therefore, a computer adaptive test. The attainment of a score as good as 80 percentile is considered a great achievement. The understanding of criteria involved in GMAT seat allotment and score calculation has great significance during the preparation for the test, and obviously also after you have given the test.

The Analytical Assessment Writing Section:

  • The primary basis, on which scores are allotted to students in this section during GMAT score allotment, is the consideration of average rating designated to a particular issue or topic.
  • Each answer is given two ratings.
  • After the evaluation of both the essays, a total score is calculated using their average.
  • The range of score for this section lies between 0 and 6, with intervals of half point.
  • An Essay Rescore Request Form is available for filling and submission, for students who are dissatisfied with the marks allotted to them in the Analytical Writing Assessment section.

Quantitative and Verbal Sections:

  • The most usual range of scores in the quantitative section lies between 7 and 50.
  • Similarly, the most commonly obtained score in the verbal section lies between 9 and 44.
  • The maximum score for each of the quantitative and the verbal section is 60.
  • It is impractical to mutually compare the scores of different sections since they have distinct scales for the evaluation of scores.
  • However, since the scales are fixed, the marks obtained in the same section can be compared for different test centers.

Here are a few of the common observations and helpful points about GMAT score obtained by students around the world.

  • The average marks scored by candidates during GMAT seat allotment ranges from 400 to 600.
  • The most important tip to keep in mind while giving a GMAT is to attempt answering as many questions as possible, preferably all of them. This is because even though a student has answered a lot of questions incorrectly, the scores are allotted on the basis of the level of difficulty of questions.
  • A maximum of ten questions can be left unanswered in the math section, and the student may still score 49 marks out of 51.

Thus, the main idea behind the GMAT score allotment is that the frequency of correct answers is in no way directly related to the final marks. It is rather based on the correctness of previous answers. An unofficial score report is produced as soon as the test is finished, and an official score report is generated about 3 weeks after the date of appearance.
