IIT JAM 2017 Pattern, Exam Schedule and Syllabus

IIT JAM 2017 Pattern: Engineering aspirants who are willing to acquire their Master’s degree from a well-known institute need to appear and qualify an entrance exam which is known as Indian Institute of Technology Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (IIT-JAM).

IIT JAM 2016 Pattern and Exam Schedule:

Students choosing IIT as their career want to take admissions in the institutes that are having excellent academic environment providing quality education in various fields such as science, management, research, and engineering.

From the year 2004, IITs started commencing a Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM) to get students enrolled in various PG programmes such as

  1. M.Sc. (Two Years),
  2. Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D.,
  3. M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree,
  4. M.Sc.-M.Tech. And other programmes.

IIT JAM 2017 is open for Indian as well as Foreign students so candidates seeking admission in such institutes need to appear in JAM 2017. There is no age restriction for appearing in this exam.

IIT JAM 2017 Pattern:

Looking for IIT JAM 2017 Pattern? So, IIT JAM 2017 Pattern includes seven test papers that will be conducted as Online Computer Based Test (CBT). The duration of this test will be 3 hours. Candidates appearing for this exam will be given questions in a random manner on their computer screen. There will be 60 questions in total that the students need to solve. The entire test is of 100 marks and will be divided into 3 sections namely section A, B, C. Attempting each section is mandatory and the medium for giving this test will be English only.

IIT JAM 2017 Pattern (Section-wise)

Section–A: It includes a total of 30 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) in which 10 questions of one mark each and 20 questions of 2 marks each. Each MCQ type question has four choices out of which only one choice is the correct answer. All wrong answers will result in negative marks.1/3 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer of 1 mark questions and similarly, 2/3 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer of 2.

Section–B: It includes a total of 10 Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) carrying two marks each. Each MSQ type question is similar to MCQ but there is a little difference in both that is there may be one or more than one choice in MSQ that are correct out of the four given choices. No negative marking will be there for wrong answers in this section.

Section–C: It consists a total of 20 Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions which involve 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of 2 marks each. For these NAT type questions, the answer needs to be entered using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor and it is of numeric nature. There will be no choices for such types of questions. Candidates have to enter the answer by using a virtual numeric keypad. There will be no negative marking in this section.

In all sections, questions that are unanswered or not attempted will result in zero marks. The students are not allowed to bring any calculator with them. Mobile phones or any other electronic devices are strictly forbidden inside the examination hall. If the candidate found using unfair means, he/she will be disqualified immediately from appearing in JAM in future also.

IIT JAM 2017 Exam Schedule:

JAM registration begins from the month of September every year and exam will be conducted in the month of February. The JAM 2017 examination will be scheduled most probably on February 12, 2017 (Sunday) in two sessions. The schedule for different Test Papers of JAM 2017 is given below.

IIT JAM 2017 Syllabus:

The JAM Syllabus includes 7 subjects that are listed below:

  • Physics (PH) :-( 10+2 level)
  • Biological sciences (BL): It covers General Biology and Mathematical Sciences
  • Biotechnology (BT): It comprises of Biology (44% weightage), Chemistry (20% weightage), Mathematics (18% weightage) and Physics (18% weightage).
  • Chemistry (CY) :-( 10+2+3 level)
  • Geology (GG):- It includes Geomorphology, Structural, Geology, Paleontology, and Mineralogy Applied Geology.

6) Mathematics (M) :-( 10+2 level)

7) Mathematics statistics (MS):- The Mathematical Statistics (MS) test paper comprises of Mathematics (40% weightage) and Statistics (60% weightage).

However, to get indulged in such programmes, a candidate must clear JAM 2017 and then apply separately to the respective Institutes.
