The UPSC will be filling around 1100 vacancies through this recruitment process which also includes 34 vacancies reserved for P.H. Category, i.e. 14 for LDCP, 7 for B/LV and 13 for H.I. These posts are distributed among 25 departments of Civil Services i.e. Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Central Services (Group A and Group B). The Union Public Service Commission has announced that they will be conducting Prelims on 7th August and the UPSC Civil Services Mains 2016 will be conducted on 3rd December for the candidates who will qualify Prelims. So, the candidates should get ready for the first step of the success ladder. After the candidates qualify mains, they will be required to appear for the Personal Interview and then successful candidates will be selected as Civil Servants in India.

UPSC Civil Services Prelims Pattern 2016:
The UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern is as mentioned below:
- Two papers of multiple-type questions: General Studies (GS) and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)
- Total Marks:400 marks; 200 marks for each paper
- Exam Duration: 2 hours for each exam.
- Language: Hindi and English
As per the IAS 2016 Pattern, there will be negative marking of one-third for each wrong answer.

The syllabus for the Preliminary Exam for Paper-I:
- Current events of national and international importance.
- History of India and Indian National Movement.
- Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
- Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
- Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
- General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change
- General Science
The syllabus for the Preliminary Exams for Paper-II:
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision-making and problem solving
- General mental ability
- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level)
Note 1: The CSAT aptitude test or Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) examination will be a qualifying paper only with a minimum of 33% to be secured to sit for the Civil Services (Mains) exam.
